Heathfield Childrens Centre
Client: London Borough of Richmond upon Thames
Flexible Facilities
This new build project designed by Sarah Wigglesworth required the construction of a new children’s centre and nursery school replacing an existing nursery building on the site. The single storey building includes increased provision for adult education, healthcare and children’s day care facilities. The project was completed on time and to budget.
Sustainable Strategy
The design team developed a low cost, low maintenance sustainable strategy for the site to meet the client’s needs and achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating. The building was constructed with a ‘brown roof’ utilizing waste material and soil from the old nursery building and site. This was applied to the roof over a waterproof membrane and it encourages the natural growth of plants and wildlife. The gabions were constructed from recycled stone and with specialist timber cladding and Limetec render to the external walls.
Award Nominee
The completed project has been nominated for the Building Magazine ‘Public Building of the Year’ Award 2010.
“We would like to thank all of those involved from Hilife, in particular your site manager, contract manager, contract surveyor and buyer who made the process of building a complex scheme simple and enjoyable”.
